Child Loses Benefits Eligibility

Generally a child ceases to be eligible at a specified age or when he or she is no longer a full-time student. Certain benefit plans offer continuation of coverage (COBRA), but you must apply for continued benefits within a specified period of time.

The following information will assist you with the various tasks which must be completed after your child loses eligibility.

  • Medical, Dental, and Vision coverage ends for your child as of midnight on the last day of the month in which he or she turns 26. Once eligibility is lost, you will be notified about the continuation of coverage option under COBRA. It is important to follow all the time deadlines outlined. If not, your dependent will lose the opportunity to continue coverage under COBRA.
  • Accidental Injury and Hospital Indemnity end on the child's 26th birthday.
  • Dependent Life Insurance eligibility ends on his or her 19th birthday, or 24th if a full-time student.

It is your responsibility to verify that their enrollment has ended when they have reached the end of their eligibility under the plan.
