Turning 65
Turning 65 is an important milestone, but navigating your next steps depends on your personal retirement plans.
Planning to retire at 65? Please visit our Retiring page (linked in the left menu). You will find key instructions on how to coordinate your retirement steps with both Medicare and HR.
Planning to continue working? If you plan to continue working past age 65 and stay enrolled in Bucknell's active employee group health plan, you can defer Medicare Part B without a late enrollment penalty. You may choose to enroll in Part A (which is premium-free for most beneficiaries) to establish your employment status with Medicare. While you remain covered under an active employer plan, your employer coverage serves as your primary insurance.
Important Note on HSAs: If you participate in a Health Savings Account (HSA), enrolling in any part of Medicare, including Part A, ends your eligibility to make or receive HSA contributions. Do not enroll in Medicare Part A or Part B if you wish to continue contributing to or receiving employer contributions in an HSA.
