Prescription Drugs

The Bucknell University Faculty and Staff Health Plan provide both retail (monthly) and mail-order (90-day supply) options for obtaining your prescriptions. The mail-order provider is Caresite.

The prescription drug copays are as follows (after the deductible is met if enrolled in the HDHP***):

 Monthly*90 day**
Generic Brand$10.00$25.00
Preferred Brand$40.00$100.00
Non-Preferred Brand$75.00$187.50

*Obtain the prescription monthly, at a retail pharmacy, at the monthly copay.

**Obtain the 90-day prescription supply via mail-order with Caresite, at the discounted copay.

***Under the CDHP plan the deductible is waived for all maintenance medications, so the member will only pay the copay per 34 day supply for maintenance medication. The easiest way to determine if a medication is a maintenance prescription is by going to the online formulary. After searching and selecting a medication it will say “considered a maintenance drug” under the medication name. For non-maintenance drugs, it won’t say anything, and these will be applied to the deductible.

EFFECTIVE JANUARY 1, 2023: Preventive Medication Drug List
The Treasury Department and the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), in consultation with the Department of Health and Human Services, have determined that certain medical care services received and items purchased, including prescription drugs, for certain chronic conditions should be classified as preventive care for someone with that chronic condition.

Preventive maintenance medications can be covered prior to the deductible being satisfied for participants of a High Deductible Health Plan (HDHP). For these medications, the deductible will not be applied and you will pay the co-payment only.

In order to be compliant with the IRS regulations related to High Deductible Health Plans (HDHPs), Bucknell has revised the list of drugs that are covered before the deductible in 2023 for participants in the Consumer Driven Health Plan (CDHP). As a result, effective January 1, 2023, members enrolled in the Geisinger Consumer Driven Health Plan (CDHP), may experience coverage changes when filling their maintenance medications.

Below please find the 2023 Safe Harbor drug list that outlines the preventive maintenance medications that will be covered prior to the deductible being satisfied. Participants of the CDHP may want to speak with their providers about lower cost alternatives that may help with their cost during their deductible phase and beyond.
